For the Home Musician

An "in-tune" piano is a more enjoyable piano to play.  Get the most out of your piano by keeping it "in-tune".  There are several things you can do to help stabilize and reduce the fluctuations in pitch of your instrument.  Following are a few points to consider:

  • Maintain a consistent humidity level in your home, especially in your piano room.
  • Purchase a hygrometer at a home improvement store and monitor the humidity level
  • Humidity levels should be between 40-45%
  • Any extreme deviation from this will cause pitch fluctuations
  • Run a humidifier in the winter and a dehumidifier in the spring/summer months, set them to 45%
  • Do not place the humidifier under the piano.  Room humidifiers put out too much humidity to be placed directly under the piano and WILL damage your instrument.
  • Consider installing a Dampp Chaser Piano Life Saver System.  The system monitors the humidify level inside your piano and operates on pennies a day.

In a tough economy, I know the piano is usually the first thing to be put on hold, but its important to tune it at least once a year in order to prevent more costly repairs from arising.

Do you notice the keys of the piano being sluggish?  Are you no longer able to play softly?  You can also get more out of your piano by keeping it well regulated.  Proper regulation of the action will ensure optimal performance and will compensate for the wear and tear of the wood and felt components of the piano's action.
